This article from the March 4th, 1993 Towne Cryer talks about the frequency of/attitudes about fighting. The writer’s assessment rings true now, over 30 years later.
This article and opinion stands true to this day. Fights are truly unnecessary and can be avoided with proper communication. There will always be conflict and disagreements in places , but this is specially true in an environment like school. School can be overwhelming and putting pressure onto students, makes it an overstimulating environment. Stress and pressure can be a main contributing factor to the start of fights. The lack of temper is due to work pressure and their capacity to manage anger will decrease over time.
Although fights can’t always be avoided, but a student should make an effort into trying to avoid one. School should be a safe environment for students and safety should be prioritized, The topic of violence and fights is undermined and should be a bigger concept, there should be more caution taken not only rom students but also admin. Violence is a serious subject and should be taken more seriously, the result of violence can leave a student with a long lasting mental health impact or even a physical one.
Fights should always be the last thing resulting from an argument. Arguments and difference of opinion will always exist and despite the fact they can’t always be resolved; students should make an attempt on compromising and trying to come to an agreement. Communication is key and in the long game the most effective way to solve an argument. Students need to be prepared for the real world by being able to solve a problem by compromising and communicating instead of fighting and making the situation worse.
Altercations are also a distraction for students and admin. Safety and Education should be the prime concern in school. Altercations disrupt a safe environment and cut time in learning. Not to mention the consumption of time it takes to resolve the altercation even after it’s over. Principals and teachers have to take time out of their busy schedules to work out a solution, and to contact guardians, while also making sure the students and admin remain safe.
Even after 30 years the article stands true; fights are unnecessary and should always be avoided. Altercations are a waste of time and proper measures should be taken to prevent them from occurring.
