As the 2024-25 basketball season nears its end, the Putnam City West Girls Basketball team looks back on a year of growth, challenges, and determination under new head coach Kennedi Simien. Stepping into a program with a strong history of success, Coach Simien embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, aiming to build on the Patriots’ legacy while instilling a culture of discipline, development, and empowerment.
“It’s pretty exciting to step into this role, especially with a program that has such a strong tradition!” Simien said. “Coaching for a program with a history of success means you’re inheriting high expectations, but it also provides a solid foundation to build on. There’s a sense of pride in following in the footsteps of previous coaches, but also a unique opportunity to put my own stamp on the program.”
Reflecting on the season, Simien emphasized the team’s growth and resilience.
“My goal was to lay a strong foundation for growth and development, both as athletes and individuals. I wanted each player to learn valuable life lessons from myself and my coaching staff, both on and off the court. Through a combination of discipline, high expectations, and tough love, we have worked hard to build not only better basketball players but also better people.”
Simien describes her coaching style as a balance of accountability and encouragement, challenging players to perform at their best while fostering a supportive team environment.
“I’d describe my coaching style as a blend of accountability, development, and empowerment. I believe in setting high expectations—pushing my players to be their best on the court, but also off the court. Discipline and hard work are key, but I also want to create an environment where players feel supported and challenged to grow as individuals, not just athletes.”
Throughout the season, the team faced tough competition, learning valuable lessons in perseverance and teamwork.
“Every season is a journey, and there’s something special about watching athletes evolve, not just in their skills but in their mindset and confidence. I’ve enjoyed building strong relationships with the players, understanding their strengths and areas for growth, and seeing them push past their limits.”
Motivating young athletes takes more than just practice drills and game strategies. Simien places a strong emphasis on mental toughness and personal development.
“I emphasize the importance of being mentally tough. When things aren’t going your way, that’s when your true character shows. It’s not about how you perform when everything’s going right, but how you respond when things get tough.”
As the season winds down, Simien remains optimistic about the future of the program and the lasting impact of this year’s experiences.
“Team sports offer a holistic approach to personal development, teaching skills and values that will benefit students in many areas of their lives, not just in athletics. On this team, we’re building more than just athletes. We’re building leaders, teammates, and people who will succeed no matter what life throws at them.”
With a season full of challenges and achievements, the Putnam City West Girls Basketball team has made its mark. Under the guidance of Coach Simien, the Patriots have strengthened their foundation for future success—both on and off the court.
