Newspaper
The Newspaper and Yearbook classes offer students a unique opportunity to develop skills in writing, photography, and storytelling while learning more about their school and peers. These classes seek students with curiosity about the world around them and a passion for sharing stories and experiences.
“We’re looking for students who are ready to tell stories and share their experiences,” said Ms. Hill, the Journalism teacher. “This class is about reflecting our school’s diversity and creating a space for everyone’s voice.”
Journalism today provides a gateway to various career paths, including reporting, photography, and roles on platforms like YouTube and TikTok. Beyond media, a degree in journalism opens doors to fields such as public relations, marketing, and many other fields, making it a versatile and valuable choice.
“Journalism opens up so many opportunities,” Ms. Hill explained. “It’s not just about traditional media anymore; it’s about learning to communicate effectively in any field.”
School publications strive to reflect the diverse cultures and traditions of the school community. From covering sporting events like basketball and football to showcasing school dances and assemblies, students learn to document and celebrate what makes their school unique. The online newspaper aims to expand its reach by exploring short-form media like reels and podcasts, becoming a hub for students to stay informed and connected to school life.
Choir
The choir class offers students more than just singing lessons; it’s a chance to discover the joy of music, foster personal growth, and explore career opportunities stemming from a love of singing. Through proper technique, students learn foundational skills such as breath control, pitch accuracy, and vocal health, ensuring their voices are preserved for years to come.
“One of the most important things we focus on is teaching students the right way to sing,” said Ms. Krows, the choir teacher. “This includes breath control, pitch accuracy, and vocal health. We want them to learn how to sing in a way that preserves their voice for years to come.”
Beyond technique, choir emphasizes the happiness and camaraderie that come from making music together. Students bond through concerts, field trips, and solo performances, creating memories and friendships that last throughout high school. “I want my students to be happy,” Ms. Krows shared. “I want them to make friends, be passionate about singing, and create memories that will last throughout high school.”
Music literacy is another cornerstone of the class, as students gain the ability to read music, understand rhythm, and interpret scores—skills that benefit those pursuing music as a hobby or career.
The choir participates in diverse events, from performing at nursing homes and Christmas concerts to competing in contests and culminating the year with a spring concert. “In February, we attend a contest where we compete with other choirs, and we also have solo and ensemble contests,” Ms. Krows explained. “The year culminates in a big spring concert that showcases everything the students have learned.”
These experiences prepare students for a variety of musical careers, such as performing in bands, singing for commercials, or becoming music therapists. Teaching roles, like directing choirs or teaching elementary music, are also potential pathways.
Ultimately, choir is about more than singing—it’s about finding one’s voice, developing new skills, and making meaningful memories. Ms. Krows’ passion for music inspires students to embrace it as a lifelong source of joy and growth.
